What do you wish people to take away from your art?

Art is such a subjective practice. I think it’s all open to creative interpretation. When anyone creates work, when it is for themselves; it comes from such a genuine, personal place. That place often reflects inner dialog, emotions, interests, and perhaps a bit of almost-subconscious fantasy, or at least it always did for me. You may aim to provide a sense of calm, a social statement, or just create something that’s easy on the eyes… it’s all open for interpretation.

Tell us about H+ Creative.

Technically speaking, H+ Creative is a woman-owned and operated artist-representation firm and visual services studio that I founded in 2015. The launch event was a curated exhibition at Art Basel Miami, which was a kind of 'first showcase' in presenting and promoting artists who work in what I was calling 'New Futurism'.

H+ today is focused on the future of creative media through vibrantly-executed imagery. We specialize in 2D, 3D, CG, AR, NFT'S and the ever-changing reality of the creative industry. We represent a tight-knit roster of diverse, top-tier international artists and we work directly with clients and collaborators worldwide. We handle projects both in-house and through our extensive team of creatives, whom we truly consider to be the best of the best.

As the director of H+, my vision was to create a roster of artists based in this 'New Futurism' genre that I am personally really interested in defining. The name H+ is an abbreviation of an international philosophical movement called Transhumanism, which advocates for the transformation of the human condition through technological advancement. It is basically the advancement of our existence through technology. In a creative sense, this is exactly what we do.

What do you do to work through a creative block?

Creative blocks come and go; I think it is up to you to keep yourself inspired. I find inspiration in my book collection, new and vintage sources, flea markets, museums, and gallery shows. I am fueled by a deep love for aesthetics, an infatuation with imagery, and a dedication to the visual arts. Tequila, psychedelics, meditation, sunshine, and a blanket always help... sometimes all at once, always in moderation.

What piece of advice would you give to someone starting out in the creative field?

I hear good advice all the time but I can rarely remember it. I read a lot and really value the advice that I receive from my father, other creatives, and business-minded friends. Recently, I have been on a positive, entrepreneurial affirmation kick; one thing that I highly recommend is constantly educating yourself. Learning is the best.

In defining your own personal style, I think that it should feel effortless. There are some things that can be taught, but I truly believe that most of the qualities of a 'good' artist (again, totally subjective) are innate and pre-determined. If you were blessed with an understanding of color and composition and have the patience and dedication of a Buddhist monk, by all means, be an artist. If you have a natural touch and your art is an extension of your being, be an artist. If you have remarkable wit and a striking sense of humor, be an artist. Even if you’re really bad at art, be an artist anyway.

Art is the hardest thing in the world. It is also a total luxury and I love it. You have to be equipped with that real-life drive. Make work for yourself and keep making it. You have to really love what you do; if it is art, that’s awesome.
