November 2021 Covergirl: Interior Designer, Becki Owens

What inspired you to start your particular journey?

I have lived in Southern California for the last 20 years, which has had a big impact on my design style. Since my family and I have lived near the ocean for most of my life, my passion is creating fresh and modern spaces influenced by the coast. I still incorporate my California roots into projects across the country; it is important to me that the spaces I create are open, inviting, and maximize natural light no matter where they are.

How did Becki Owens get started and what does it look like now?

My business began by accident - by doing small projects for friends - but as my family began to grow, I had more time to invest in design. As I started larger projects, custom builds and complete home remodels, I began to put more focus into building my social media handles and developing an online community for inspiration and design. With the help of my amazing team, Becki Owens has grown to include licensing opportunities as well as residential and corporate design. ****

What are your favorite materials and colors to work with?

I have always believed that less is more when it comes to design. I always start with a neutral foundation and incorporate layers of texture, clean lines, and warm lighting. Some of my favorite styling elements are vintage rugs, woven furniture, and artisan ceramics. Often, my spaces feel open and airy, softened with linen fabrics.

How do you stay ahead of your competitors?

Honestly, this isn’t a big focus for me; my own work keeps me so busy that I don’t have a lot of time to look around and compare! Although it is important to grow as a designer and incorporate new trends, I always try to stay true to my own aesthetic. I also make sure to listen to my clients' voices and respect their visions. Our company's growth has been a very organic journey that I am really proud of.

What are the three most important lessons you have learned while building your brand?

Don’t be afraid to take a risk and put yourself out there. Be proud of your own creations and share them. It is okay to say no. Sometimes, it is really hard to pass up on opportunities or jobs. At the end of the day, it is more important to maintain balance. Only commit to projects that align with your time and resources.
