Rising Actress & Star Of TV Series SkyMed, Natasha Calis
What’s your favorite role you’ve done?
It’s so hard to choose! I acted in a movie called The Possession many years ago; to this day, I still look back at those times and smile. An evil spirit possesses my character in the movie, so I had a ton of fun playing this thrilling and wild character. I learned a lot about myself as an actor, including my emotional bandwidth and the places I could go, but also learned to snap right out of that trance without letting any of it affect me mentally. Playing that character at such a young age paved the way for me in every role I've played since.
What can you tell us about the new show SkyMed?
It’s life and death at 20,000 feet. Skymed is a super fun, high-stakes medical drama with a lot of adventure, beautiful scenery, and the intense personal lives of a group of young flying medevacs in the North. It highlights the difficulties of working in those unforgiving conditions, all while following their personal battles and relationships. It's an incredibly exciting show with gripping storylines and takes place in a world I think audiences can really get immersed in.
What are you most excited about in your upcoming role in SkyMed?
I’m excited for audiences to watch Hayley’s journey of growth and acceptance through her experiences in the North. She's new to the Skymed team—she left her job as a labour and delivery nurse in Toronto, moving to the north to immerse herself in a new and intense world to run from her past (which she inevitably needs to deal with). So, watching her throughout the season go through what she needs to do to finally heal is a pretty powerful plot. I'm excited for people to watch her throughout that journey.
When did you start acting?
I started professionally acting when I was seven years old. I was acting before that, though, before I even knew the definition of acting. I've always had such a fascination with films. When I was little, I would watch them and completely escape into the stories that they would tell—so much so that after the movie ended, I would walk around in life as one of the characters of that movie. I literally couldn't break that habit. I remember feeling embarrassed about my habit because I would even act out the roles in front of others. I would watch a movie with other friends around, and as soon as it ended, I would pretend to be one of the characters and pretend imaginary scenarios around me. My friends had no idea what was going on. I look back on that now and think, “How funny and awesome,” because I now act in a show and play a character who my younger self would obsess over.
What’s your favorite genre of acting?
Drama—I love diving deep into characters and their emotions. I think that diving into character goes back to what I said about The Possession: immersive acting helped me learn how to go to dark places for the performance, but also taught me to snap right out of that trance and not let any of those emotions weigh on me. I honestly just find it so fun!
What’s your go-to drink at the bar?
I absolutely love a Margarita if it’s during Happy Hour. If not, I'll usually have a glass of wine. A glass of wine (usually red) when I cook dinner is a moment I also very much enjoy. □
