Filmmaker, Kat Coiro

If you haven't already heard of filmmaker Kat Coiro, here is a quick introduction.

After receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre and Russian History from Carnegie Mellon University and studying at the Moscow Art Theater in Russia, Coiro began producing, directing, writing, and acting in short films. During this time, Coiro founded Dead Serious Films. Coiro's projects include award winner such as: “The Passage of Mrs. Calabash” (2004), “Murdering Mama's Boy” (2007), “Glock” (2009), and “Kidnapping Caitlynn” (2009).

Coiro made her directorial debut with “L!fe Happens” (2011), which she co-wrote and produced with actress and filmmaker Krysten Ritter. The film premiered at the 2011 Los Angeles Film Festival and won the Cinequest Film Festival's Ensemble Award.

Coiro's following feature film project, “And While We Were Here” (2012), opened at the Tribeca Film Festival, at which it was nominated for Best Narrative Feature. The film was also a nominee for the Variety Piazza Grande Award at the Locarno International Film Festival. Coiro was eight months pregnant during the filming of “And While We Were Here,” which was shot on the Italian island of Ischia for 11 days.

In addition to full-length movies, Coiro is also known for her work on various television series. She has directed episodes of popular shows such as “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”, “It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia”, “Modern Family”, and “Shameless.”

This month, Coiro's latest release, “Marry Me” (starring Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson, and Maluma), will premiere in theaters and to stream on February 11th. Keep a lookout as Coiro joins previous features on H3R Watchlist - Nia DaCosta and Chloé Zhao - in the upcoming Marvel web-series, “She-Hulk.”
