Restless App Founder, Olivia DeRamus
Restless is such an impactful app, serving as a digital safe space for women. What inspired you to create this remarkable app?
Thank you! I went through a difficult experience for a number of years; when I was a freshman in college I was sexually assaulted. When I reported him to the university (and was found in the right), he sued me to the tune of millions of dollars for defamation. The resulting lawsuit, which lasted for the majority of my adult life, taught me what it feels like to be forcibly put on mute.
With truth on my side, I kept waiting for the courts to protect me. However, like so many before me, I came to realize that the legal system was stacked against me and could not adequately protect me. That realization - along with the fact that I was helpless to change my reality - was devastating. I felt like I couldn’t talk about what was happening to me, and, to be "okay" again, I realized that I needed to create something that would facilitate the voices and experiences of other women. That "something" ended up being Restless Network, a space where women can be vulnerable, ask for and give support, and so much more. I’m really proud of it, and creating Restless has helped me heal from my own trauma.
What do you hope that women will take away from the Restless app?
I hope they know that, with the Restless Network on their phone, it doesn’t matter where in the world they are, or what’s happening in their life... they will always have access to a community of resources and support. I hope they learn that it is okay to ask for help, because when you do, so many people go out of their way to support you. That you can suffer and but still to talk about fun stuff like dating. You are allowed to take your mind off things. This is why Restless covers so many topics, not just #MeToo.
Where do you see Restless in 10 years?
I see Restless growing into a "big player" in the social media landscape (to the size of a platform like Reddit, for example). The larger we scale, the more support we can provide to those who need it the most. Five women supporting you can make a lifesaving difference, but imagine how wonderful it would feel to be supported by thousands. This support would not be because you are famous, but because you are a human being, and others have been through it too.
A main focus of the Restless app is power. There is even a "work" category on the app to inspire women are to continue to work toward their dreams. As a successful businesswoman and entrepreneur yourself, what advice would you like to give to these women?
Don't wait to start. You don't need someone else's permission and it's okay if you don't feel prepared. The truth is, you’re never going to feel like you’ve got it all figured out. Launch the product, even if you don’t feel ready. Ironically, I initially struggled to ask for help. However, once I got over that fear, I was amazed at how many doors opened up for me. I would also caveat that with saying, ask for help from those who are actually accessible to you. If you’re just getting started, a major CEO may not have time to talk to you. There ARE a lot of people who are on your level (or the level just above you) who can answer questions and open your horizons. Horizontal mentorship is everything... and that’s why it is an integral part of the Restless concept!
What's something our audience would be surprised to learn about you?
I may come across like an extrovert when in front of an audience - especially when promoting Restless - but I actually have social anxiety, just like anyone else! You have no idea how nervous something like an Instagram Live can make me. In the end, I find that keeping my goals at the front of my mind helps me show up and power through. □
