How Illustrator Victoria Cubbon Started The Creative Women Community

Why did Creative Women Community get started, and what does it look like now?

Creative Women Community started because as I was transitioning from a Graphic Designer to an Illustrator, I was seeking support and didn't know where to look. During the pandemic, I had a lot of extra time on my hands, so I just started sharing beautiful artwork by female artists that I admire. And it took off. I had no idea at the time, but what started out as just sharing art has become an amazing community of female artists of almost 200k. It is a platform in which women can ask questions, connect, and learn new things. There is a real need for support for female artists and illustrators, and I hope to generate inspiration and encouragement.

What has been the biggest obstacle you've had to overcome?

My own self-doubts, impostor syndrome, shyness, anxiety, and depression.

Sometimes I can be my own worst enemy. There have been days where I'm glued to the couch watching The Office, just trying to escape my own self-sabotaging thoughts. But I always pull myself back together and jump back in to the work. We can't let imposter syndrome or our own self-doubts keep us from chasing after our dreams.

Things don't always go according to plan. The journey never seems to be linear and you can't get from point A to point B without any roadblocks. For example, I didn't get into Graphic Design school when I first applied. So I took an intro arts program instead. It ended up being one of the best years of my life. I met my best friend, I learned skills in audio, video, and photography that I've utilized in my business. Failing usually turns out to be a blessing in disguise for me.

What goals do you want to accomplish within the next 3 years?

This past year has been a whirlwind with so many amazing opportunities and there are so many possibilities for the future! One thing I want to focus on is scaling my other business -- Illustrate Your Brand. Through Illustrate Your Brand, I work one on one with brands to help to strengthen their image and connect with their audiences.

Within the Creative Women Community, we want to continue empowering and encouraging women to pursue their dreams, because it is 100% possible to make a living as a creative! We also plan on launching a platform that will be filled with courses and resources for creatives to help them launch and grow their own businesses.

Another goal I want to accomplish in the next 3 years is to share my experiences and write a book about the mindset it takes to grow a creative business.

What piece of advice would you give your younger self?

Just go for it and don't be afraid to fail. You're going to learn from your failures, even if they sting at the time.

What is your all time favorite quote?

"I'm going to make everything around me beautiful- that will be my life."

- Elsie de Wolfe
