Defining Creativity with Sarah Grossman

Your art is absolutely stunning! What's your background? How did you get started?

I have made and been passionate about art my entire life; I went to art school and had such an amazing time. However, I knew pretty early on that I didn't want to be a working studio artist. I just knew that I wanted to work in the arts and have been working at the San Diego Museum of Art for almost 14 years now. Fashion has always been one of my major passions and I was looking for an artistic outlet that let me combine my two great loves - art and fashion - which is how my blog, Polychromist, started.

How would you define creativity? How does creativity pour into other facets of your life?

Creativity to me is finding new and unique possibilities in everyday situations. We can infuse all parts of life with our own unique points of view. Creativity is honestly the driving force of my entire life. I don't like to do anything ”run of the mill” if I can help it. From the way I dress, to the way I decorate my home, to even the vacations I choose, everything is from my perspective.

Where do you feel the most inspired?

Nowhere inspires me more than art museums. They are my personal “holy places.”

What are your top dream brand collaborations? Why?

Partnering with brands is amazing, however, my dream collaborations would be with cities. I would love to partner with cities all over the US and the world to showcase what is special about the arts in those cities. From the fine art museums to local galleries to “off the beaten path” street art and public works.

What is something you learned later on in your career that you wish you had learned earlier?

People may be shocked to learn that a strong sense of self-confidence wasn't always my second nature. I have always strived to push the creative envelope both in my professional career and my personal projects, but I wish that I had learned to stop worrying about what others thought of me earlier on in my life and career. I think that, if I had, I would have started my creative metamorphosis earlier. The good news is, it's never too late to believe in yourself above the opinions of others.

What excites you the most about this New Year? What are you looking forward to in 2022?

Each year, I am excited to see what new connections I will make. I have made so many amazing creative friends through creating my blog and Instagram feed and I cannot wait to see what new artists I will discover and learn from.
