Illustrative Fun, Ava Wolf

Tell us about yourself and your illustrations.

I am a self-taught, self-employed illustrator currently living in Nashville, TN, with my husband. My artwork focuses on mental health, anxiety, and life through somewhat of a "visual diary," in which I draw about my feelings and life experiences. In my free time, I love to spend hours in coffee shops, play soccer, and spend time with friends.

What inspired you to pursue a career in illustrations?

Although I didn’t study art in school, I have been growing my collection of sketchbooks ever since I was little and often found myself doodling during my college classes. I didn’t know enough about the art industry in college to realize all the different career options that were available to me, but after I graduated - and struggled to find a 9-5 job - I became connected with several illustrators in Nashville through a shared workspace. I began to make art again and learned most of what I know today as an illustrator from the ladies at the workspace. These women taught me so much about the industry and helped me develop my style; I was inspired and encouraged by watching their success and wanted to see what I could do in the industry.

You describe your doodles as "relatable". How do you create relatable illustrations about topics such as mental health, grief, and selfcare?

I try to be as honest as I can through my illustrations. Before I start an illustration, I journal about my current feelings and situation. This often leads to an idea, which leads to a finished piece. As a visual learner, it helps me to get inspired and process my emotions by to drawing out my feelings. The best part about sharing my personal illustrations the way in which it connects me to other people going through similar experiences. It helps me feel less alone and I hope that my illustrations help others to feel less alone too.

What do you hope that your audience takes away from your illustrations?

I hope that, through my art, others realize that they aren’t the only ones dealing with anxiety and/or going through difficult things. By sharing the tips and tricks that I have learned in therapy, I also hope to help people learn how to take better care of themselves.

What is your favorite illustration that you've created thus far and why?

I really like my Take What You Need illustration. It’s a simple way to invite some self-care into your day - an invitation to connect with yourself and ask what you need - whether it be rest, movement, compassion, etc.
