Into The Artistic Mind Of Emma Childs

We love your style! How did you get into art? When did you decide to pursue it as a career?

Thank you so much! To be honest, had I never thought of art as a career until the end of my undergrad at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). I never really felt internal pressure to choose a career path; I always felt more comfortable letting it unfold and become clear as I got older. For as long as I can remember, art has always been my main interest. I really grew as an artist at MICA, and, by the time I graduated in 2018, I felt a new sense of confidence that I could make it my career. So I went for it. You kind of have to wake up every day and choose it. I don’t ‘report’ to anyone but myself, which is simultaneously a beautiful and intimidating feeling.

What do you do when you are in a creative rut?

Acceptance and patience are key when the tank is low in the creativity department. You have to remind yourself that ruts are normal. There is so much more to my career than the creation of artwork. When I am in a rut, I shift my focus to more of the ‘business side’ of the job. I try to appreciate what I have already created and trust that there will be more where that came from. I know that, if I get too hard on myself, it only prolongs the rut and increases my anxiety. Seeing other art in-person at galleries and museums can help, too, helping me to get my mind off my own art and put it in context with the world outside of my studio.

Where do you want to travel and why?

There is a long list, but I would love to one day see Mont Saint-Michel. My mom and I have been talking about seeing it together lately, so that is the first thing that came to mind.

What does art mean to you?

To me, art is a way to reflect on and connect with the world and people around me. I love being an observer and creating things that didn’t exist before. I find it really exciting when people connect with the things that I create. I think that’s why people make art and always have. Art can mean many things to many people and has almost infinite definitions. We just have the urge to make things. It increases our self-awareness and helps us to understand things that we may have never even noticed or thought about otherwise.

What are important qualities you look for in a friend?

I love my friends. They’re fun, smart, loyal, honest, make me laugh, and are cooler than me.
