The Mind Behind The Soraya, Soraya Tafazoli

Introduce yourself and your brand. When did you get started and why did you decide to start The Soraya?

My Name is Soraya Tafazoli and I am the owner and the Creative Director of the brand, The Soraya, based in Dubai. I was inspired to take the artistic path in life because, growing up, I was surrounded by colors and canvases around my house.

I got my diploma in fashion design from the Institute of Technology Development in Canada. When the pandemic struck, I began developing my brand by registering The Soraya in Dubai, where I launched a collection of four looks inspired by powerful women in history, including corset leather belts. They are named: “Soraya,“ “Beatrice,“ “Mumtaz Mahal,“ and “Desiree.“

What is the biggest piece of advice you would give to women interested in starting a fashion brand?

I always tell women to “go for their dream jobs.” Once I realized that my dream job was to become a fashion designer, I came up with the idea for The Soraya.

What would you like to see change within the fashion industry? Why?

I hope that luxury brands stop ignoring the subject of sustainability; the ironic paradox of sustainable luxury brands remains prevalent in the fashion industry.

Who are your biggest inspirations?

I have always been inspired by ‘50s fashion.

What do you value most in life and why?

The thing I value most is my reputation, as it takes a lifetime to build a name for yourself and mere moments to lose it.

What are you looking forward to most for 2022?

In 2022, I hope to introduce The Soraya to the entire world!
