Fashion As A Form Of Self-Discovery
Every year, I go through a phase in which the items in my closet quite literally make me gag. It’s a theatrical reaction, sure, but it doesn’t fall far from how I feel. When I find myself in this state, I will typically allow myself to feel repulsed by my own stylistic choices for a few weeks before my dissatisfaction becomes intolerable.
Pai Skincare Founder, Sarah Brown
I created Pai as a solution to my own skin issues. I suddenly developed a skin condition, chronic urticaria, in my mid-20s. It became onset in one night, and I developed hives over about 80% of my body. It is an idiopathic condition, meaning “no known cause,” which makes it very hard to effectively manage; additionally, advice from the medical community was nonexistent. After years of popping pills that masked rather than treated the problem, I took matters into my own hands and started to identify my triggers. This included a deep dive not just into diet and lifestyle factors, but ingredients in my skincare as well.
ESTAS Beauty Founders, Alejandra Thompson & Cristina Beltran
Cristina Beltran and Alejandra Thompson are the co-founders of ESTAS Beauty. Cristina worked in PR before having open heart triple bypass surgery: one of the catalysts for starting her company. Model Turned Mama Bird, Denise Vasi
My name is Denise Vasi, and I have spent 20+ years as a model and actress. However, when I transitioned into motherhood, I started to look at health and wellness in a different way. When I looked at the industry seven years ago, I saw a tremendous lack of diversity and lack of inclusivity.

Sugared & Bronzed Founder, Courtney Claghorn
SUGARED + BRONZED was started out of my Santa Monica apartment in November 2010 when I was 23 years old. I had a “corporate” job down the street and during the early days of the business, I would spray tan clients during lunch or after work. After a few months of seeing the business grow, I left my job to take clients full time and began to look for our first retail space.
CEO & Founder Of Beautycounter, Gregg Renfrew
Gregg Renfrew began her career by starting several businesses. But she made a name for herself in 2013 when she launched a very different kind of project, a clean beauty brand she named Beautycounter. With Beautycounter, Gregg Renfrew has changed the game of makeup and skincare with choices that are safer and more environmentally sustainable.
Strange Bird Beauty Founder, Tina Chow Rudolph
Tell us about your early stages when building the Strange Bird brand. The idea for Strange Bird came to me when I was pregnant with my first child... but it took me 4 years - and two babies - to finally launch in Nov 2019. For me, the early stages of entrepreneurship were like daily tests for my self-trust. Each day that I trusted myself was another step forward.
Brittany Lo, Founder Of Beia Beauty
How did Beautini and Beia get started? Beautini I started 6 years ago after graduating from Babson College. I wrote in my 2nd grade journal that I would one day start a beauty company and always thought that was the plan. But entering my senior year, I was given a full time offer by my dream company - a beauty conglomerate - and it made me really think about what path I wanted to take.
