When Seasons Change

When Seasons Change

It creeps up on you. Silent & steady, unnoticed until it transforms into something bright & beautiful; beckoning you to relish in the shift. I have always loved the changing of the seasons. Winter relents to blushing Spring, who coyly insists that life will bloom once again. Summer wrestles Spring into submission with his heatwaves. Autumn creeps up on Summer,  surprising him with her gentle persuasion of chill & spice, until, finally, Winter blows through Autumn’s serenity with his mighty strength and closes her harvests with his icy pause. Each season has its own way of shifting the culture of our lives without demanding permission; we just realize one day that it has.

Honoring the changing seasons allows us to flourish. All of life is absorbed into this endless cycle of planting, growing, reaping & dying. Each of us go through our own personal seasons; ones in which our creativity flows & we plant seeds for the future in our excitement. These are days of inspiration & expectation; of careful planning & hope for the future. These days, where we have extra inspiration & energy, we aspire to great things, feeling as if we are on top of the world.

This phase is followed by a period of hard work and  growth. Often unseen & unnoticed, this season requires patience; a period of waiting for the things that we have planted to finally sprout to life. We often feel tested as this metamorphosis takes place. This season can feel discouraging & frustrating, when we should really take the opportunity to simply relax, sit back & enjoy the process. Faithfulness & consistency are key.

Eventually, when our hard work comes to fruition & our dreams seemingly materialize overnight, reaping the fruits of our labor can be one of the most rewarding & exciting seasons in our lives. This abundance brings great joy & satisfaction. Everything in our world seems to suddenly align & multiply. We are led to hope that this season lasts forever.

Our final season - death - is often the most avoided & unappreciated season. However, I have become fond of him because he holds a valuable secret. Death presents the opportunity to rest & recover from the abundance of harvest. No one is built to be productive 24/7. Seasons of reaping can be exhausting, as your resources are drained. The season of death is one best spent taking care of yourself, resting, & embracing the lack of agenda while renewing your soul. Without the silence & rest of the season of death, we won’t be able to plant, grow or reap effectively in the future.

Learning to tap into the seasons of our relationships, careers, passion projects & personal lives, as well as the rhythms of the literal seasons, is richly rewarding. Once you can identify your personal  season, you can embrace the present. Take it to heart that the future will unfold just as it is meant to: in season.

Right now, we are in a new season – Autumn – and will soon step into Winter’s cold embrace. What are you celebrating in this new season? What changes are you making & embracing? What season do you find yourself in personally? How can you better relax into your current season while expecting the excitement of the new season?

Change is not our enemy; rather, it is our friend. When we learn to embrace his stealthy ways in our lives, we begin to see the shifts in our seasons not as permanent goodbyes, but as opportunities to embrace a new season & welcome the old one back again in due time. It’s a way to live fully present to each moment life brings us; holistic women in sync with our own seasons.
