From Chronic Illness Sufferer To PhD Student, Ellie Hurer
Ellie Hurer is a final year Ph.D. student studying at the University of Hertfordshire, UK. Her research is based on finding therapeutic compounds to slow down the growth of Pancreatic Cancer, to allow traditional treatments such as Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy to be effective. During her Ph.D., she has suffered from many chronic and mental illnesses, undergoing multiple major surgeries, ITU admissions, and harsh treatment cycles. This leads her to create a social media account (@myphdexperience) to share her Ph.D. journey, while suffering from illnesses, to inspire others to follow their dreams regardless of their circumstances, be a role model for young people in STEM, and to create a safe space for her and others. In early 2022, she took on the position of NATO Youth Ambassador for social media, representing the UK.
Seasonal Affective Disorder: Coping The Scandinavian Way
Do you dread the winter months and the shorter days? Do you feel like these seasonal changes cause you to feel sad and depressed? These emotions can come from what we know as seasonal depression, or seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
Crucible Of Pain: Living With Chronic Pain
Few things can wear us down like pain. Pain gets our attention in ways other things can’t - the blaring alarm that deep down, something is not right. Pain is a warning system alerting us to the presence of inflammation, of woundedness, of a system out whack, in need of recalibration. It’s easy to associate chronic pain with older people, but we often overlook the many young men and women, even children, who face this struggle daily.
3 Reasons To Push Through Rejection
“I love my rejection slips,” the American poet Sylvia Plath said. “They show me I try.” After receiving rejections from predominant publications like The New Yorker, Sylvia Plath would eventually go on to win the Pulitzer Prize. While not everyone dreams of becoming a poet, there is much to learn from Plath’s resiliency.
The Gift of Neurodivergence in Entrepreneurs
“Neurodiversity means to be part of the diversity of humanity as a whole. It means different, not flawed – and everyone is different. That’s something I could have done with knowing as I grew up”, says Florence Welch, the sextuple platinum-certified lead singer of Florence + the Machine—a band that has achieved global success.
Honoring My Undercurrent: My Journey To Pursuing Emotional Honesty & Acceptance
From the many challenges I have faced in life, I have learned that challenges are made up of two parts: the actual circumstance, and the outlook you choose to embody towards that circumstance. The circumstance is 10% of the equation, and the attitude is the other 90%. I know from this that my attitude and resilience are keys to success.

Music’s Impact On Your Mental Health
“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imaginations and life to everything.” - Plato. Music is a cornerstone of our lives as humans. We turn to it to express our moods, both in times of happiness and celebration, and when we need comfort from grief or sadness.

Shae Leonard is a board-certified physician’s assistant, certified advanced functional medicine practitioner, speaker, gym owner, mental health/gut/hormone expert, and founder of Shae Leonard Wellness: an online health consulting company dedicated to the root cause(s) of women's daily symptoms with education, empowerment, and healing.
Building Habits
After phases of burnout, I feel a burst of motivation to nourish myself and rebuild my daily routine. Eventually, however, the spark fades and I once again fall into a monotonous cycle dictated by habits that do not serve me, which accumulate and lead to burnout once again. Atomic Habits affirmed that this cycle of attempt and failure is not my fault, but rather the rule of human behavior—in fact, 92% of people fail to keep their new year’s resolutions.
Aching For The Heavens: Curing Our Homesickness
I have become well acquainted with this marvelous sensation throughout my travels, as many places once unfamiliar to me have become second homes. Returning to them feels like walking into the arms of an old friend as I become reacquainted with a place I know and love once more. It’s a curious phenomenon: the more I travel, the more home becomes a steadiness within me rather than a place outside of me.
Rethinking Boundaries For A Better, More Productive You
Do you feel that you can express to your superiors when work becomes overwhelming? Or do you feel like you are constantly saying “yes” for approval? Sharon Martin, a licensed psychotherapist who specializes in boundary-setting, defines boundaries as “rules and guidelines that tell others how we want to be treated.
“Yes” Is A Commitment, “No” Is A Choice
Have you ever felt stretched thin, with not enough time and energy for everything on your plate? Then you might have accidentally said “yes” to too many things. Here’s the thing: ”Yes” is a commitment, and “No” is a choice. That’s something I’ve learned during my personal growth journey, which I recently spoke about on LUNA The Podcast.
There Is Only One You, My Journey To Cultivating Confidence
Some of the most impactful events on my confidence (in a weirdly great way) are when things go wrong. My mom has always said that “The only way out is through.” This piece of wisdom then encourages me to put my head right in the muck of what is going on—I then am able to rise above and come out the other side a bit wiser and a lot more confident, having added that piece of advice to my tool kit for life.
The Beauty Of Burning Out: How To Reignite Your Drive & Passion
Burnout may just be our greatest gift, our saving grace. It reveals a lack of balance and health, powerful enough to awaken us from the stupor and routine of our days, and motivate us to change for the better. Burnout also reveals a lack of balance and health, helping us realize we are not walking in the most powerful, beautiful, or generous versions of ourselves.
Has Cancel Culture Affected Our Ability to Forgive?
Despite the fact that we’ve been conditioned to extend forgiveness from a very early age, it’s not something that comes naturally to the human mind. It’s a skill that we have to actively practice. This is why forgiveness is easier for older, more experienced, and wiser minds.
Can Psychedelic Drugs Go Beyond Recreation?
Psychedelic drugs like ayahuasca, peyote, and mushrooms have long been recognized as the drugs that defined America in the 1960s (most notably, the Woodstock Festival). Psychedelics have been around much longer than the past 50 years in fact; their history dates as early as the late 1400s and 1500s throughout many different cultures and religions. With increasing research on their effects, these drugs are no longer only utilized for recreational use but have expanded to help treat mental health disorders like anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
Toxic Relationships & Their Consequences: My Journey From Self-Loathing To Self-Love
Staying in a toxic relationship with both my partner and myself, getting constant panic and anxiety attacks, and going through depression, insomnia, and eating disorders were normal Tuesdays for me. The saddest part of this cycle was that I refused to see the obvious: I refused to acknowledge that the relationship I had brought me more harm than good. The fear of losing the person I thought I loved made me lose myself in the process too.
Nurture Your Body With The Benefits Of Nature
Summer is finally in full swing, which means plenty of sunny days with dreamy weather: the best time of year to be outdoors and soak up nature's health benefits. Dedicating a few minutes of time to get outside has a plethora of benefits, including mental well-being, intake of vitamin D, improved concentration and creativity, and a decrease in screentime.
